Antique Mortar
About the Item
Sculptural small mortar originally used to grind spices. Hand carved from a single piece of teak wood. Full dimensions; Bottom 7" x 6” x 9.5" high x 6.5" deep inside x top 6.5 x 6" diameter. Circa 1930
This mortar was hand made in the spirit of Wabi-Sabi, a Japanese philosophy that beauty can be found in imperfection and impermanence. It is a beauty of things modest and humble. A beauty of things unconventional. It is the opposite of vulgarity. The Emperor of Japan had a Wabi garden. Wabi is for people who already have a lot.
