Art Deco White Seashell Motif Table lamp By Anna Lisa Thomson, Upsala Ekeby

About the Item

The Snäcka (seashell in Swedish) table lamp, designed by Anna-Lisa Thomson for Upsala-Ekeby in the 1940s, is a stunning example of Swedish mid-century ceramic artistry. Made of earthenware with a matte white glaze, the lamp features an elegant relief pattern of diagonal seashell motifs that wrap around its curved body and extend over the shoulder behind the lamp fixture. The unglazed portions of the design create a striking contrast, highlighting the intricate details of the relief work. The Snäcka series, introduced in 1944, included about ten ceramic objects, all sharing the characteristic shell pattern and soft organic shapes. The series was part of Upsala-Ekeby’s postwar production and reflected the studio’s commitment to high-quality design and craftsmanship. These lamps trace their origins to the Expo series, designed for the Paris Exhibition in 1937, where Upsala-Ekeby sought to elevate the artistic level of its ceramics for an international audience. Production of the Snäcka glaze continued from 1944 to 1949, and this lamp bears the deep stamp "A.L.T. Ekeby 18", signifying its authenticity. The lampshade isn't included. But, if any of the lampshades in the photos is desired, we can include it for free—just let us know. However, an extra charge may apply if the shipping cost increases. ABOUT ANN-ALISA THOMSON Anna-Lisa Thomson (1905–1952) was a pioneering figure in Swedish ceramic design, leaving a significant mark on the industry despite her short life. After studying at the Tekniska skolan (now Konstfack), she began her career at S:t Eriks lervarufabrik, producing everyday household ceramics. In 1935, she joined Upsala-Ekeby, where she worked alongside Sven Erik Skawonius to elevate the company’s artistic output for the Paris 1937 and New York 1939 World Exhibitions. This period marked her evolution into an increasingly independent and expressive ceramic artist. Thomson developed a distinctive style, often drawing inspiration from nature—incorporating motifs of leaves, flowers, stones, shells, and marine life. Her artistic vision is particularly evident in collections such as Paprika, Athene, and Marina, each showcasing her talent for merging organic forms with bold, sometimes surreal elements. Towards the end of her life, she devoted more time to painting, drawing, and poetry, spending long periods in Grundsund, Bohuslän, by the sea, where she found inspiration and community.
