About the Item

Vintage set of 2 smaller bowls and one larger bowl feature minimal Mid Century Modern forms and striking Scandinavian Modern enamel decor in organic brown colors with jewel tone accents. The smaller bowls feature abstract geometric designs in Bourdeau red, emerald green, and espresso and mocha brown colors, and the larger bowl in decorated in tone-on-tone brown palette. The textured surfaces of the bowls can be seen through the layers of enamel, adding visual interest to the pieces. All bowls are clearly stamped on the bottoms with "Engø Norway". It was documented that pieces marked “Engo Norway” are made by Bjorn Engo himself, as the mark was reserved for the pieces that were created by Engo and his assistant in his studio on pre-formed copper molds. The mass-produced pieces that were designed by him were marked differently. The marks allow us to date the vessels to early 1950s to 1960s, when Bjorn Engo maintained his enamel studio. Sculptural, classic Scandinavian Modern set with elegant form, high quality craftsmanship, and statement piece presence will be a great gift to a collector or a design enthusiast and will make a perfect display accent or enhance tablescapes, blending seamlessly with wide range of interiors, from Traditional to Modernist, Transitional, Organic Modern, Scandinavian Modern, Organic Modern, Japandi, Collected, or Contemporary. Bjørn Engø (1920-1981)was a highly active and versatile Norwegian designer and architect. In 1946, Bjørn Engø graduated from the Norwegian State School of Crafts, Art, and Design, and started designing furniture for A/S Gjøvik Møbelindustri in 1947; the pieces were characterized by post-functionalist style with airy, organic feel. In 1948, Bjørn Engø designed several exclusive pieces of furniture for Alfred Enge, as well as chair, table and a wall lamp for the Norwegian Association of Applied Arts' wicker furniture exhibition; in the same year he established his own studio. In 1950, Bjørn Engø began a collaboration with the furniture manufacturer Gustav Bahus Eftf, and his pieces were shown at the exhibition Norway Designs for Living in Chicago in 1951. In early 1950s, in collaboration with Gustav Bahus, he created prototypes for the Bahus-Engølinjen line. His chair with a tongue-shaped seat and back in laminated wood was shown at the H-55 exhibition in Helsingborg, Sweden, in 1955. However, few of Engø's furniture pieces would become widely available, as they were far too radical for the tastes of the time. In 1957, Engø was responsible for the ID Group's pavilion at the Triennale di Milano, for which he received a gold medal. He also designed decorative fabrics for Sandvika Veveri and lighting fixtures for Arnold Wiigs Fabrikker. From 1953, Bjørn Engø experimented with exclusive enamel works in his own workshop, creating various vessels, such as bowls, dishes, and vases, on copper molds with hand-crafted milling and enameling. He also designed gold jewelry pieces for the goldsmith Sten S. Heyerdal. While his hand-crafted enamel works were primarily aimed at a more affluent audience, Engø wanted to make affordable everyday goods, and in mid-1950s he developed a line of mass-produced objects in anodized aluminum with galvanized surfaces manufacturer Emalox; in 1967 Engo was awarded the Norwegian Design Award for his works for Emalox. Examples of Engo’s work are in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Louvre in Paris, and the Melbourne Museum in Victoria, Australia, as well as many other museums and private collections.
