Danish Dark Green Stoneware Vase "Model 167", Eva Stæhr-Nielsen, Saxbo, 1954

About the Item

A beautiful green glaze vase with incised leaf decorations by Eva Staehr Nielsen for Saxbo. Marked with the Saxbo yin-yang symbol encircled, the model number 167, four dots (the marks of Sigurd Kjær, Saxbo's master turner), “Saxbo Denmark” and “ESTN” and a horizontal three for the production year. The yin-yang symbol encircled was used in the period from 1949-1968. Eva Staehr-Nielsen joined Saxbo in June 1932. For almost 20 years from 1932-1952 she was Saxbo’s only artist designer and although other designer brought some renewal of production, the ceramist representing the company's artistic profile, is Eva Stæhr-Nielsen to whom the classic Saxbo style should be attributed. Saxbo (1930-1968) is now widely recognized as one of the finest independent ceramic workshops in Scandinavia with a wide and far ranging influence on several generations of ceramicists. Today, pieces are included in the collections of the Copenhagen Industrial Arts Museum, The Swedish National Museum, the New York Museum of Modern Art and the New York Metropolitan Museum of Arts. Eva Stæhr-Nielsen was one of the most influential Danish modern ceramic artists. After graduating from the School of Arts in Copenhagen, (in 1932) Stæhr-Nielsen began working for Saxbo, one of the most prominent independent ceramic workshops in Denmark. During her time there, she had contributed a number of designs, essentially defining the “classic Saxbo style” with Nathaniel Krebs and her sculptural shapes and refined patterns which went on to influence many ceramicists to this day. After the closing of Saxbo in 1968, she moved on to work for Royal Copenhagen where she worked the rest of her life.
