Eva Staehr-Nielsen Saxbo Mottled Brown Studio Pottery Bowl

About the Item

Eva Staehr-Nielsen (Danish, 1911-76) was one of the most influential and important Scandinavian ceramicists. After completing her training at Copenhagen’s Art-Craftsman School she joined Saxbo in 1932, where she worked extensively with Nathalie Krebs. It was to become one of the most important independent studios for Scandinavian ceramics with leading designers like Axel Salto, Jais Nielsen, Hugo Liisberg as well as Staehr-Nielsen all producing designs for them. Staehr-Nielsen was highly influential at Saxbo and following its closure in 1968 she moved to Royal Copenhagen however it is her work at Saxbo which remains most sought after. Her work is held in the National Museum in Stockholm, The British Museum, Victoria and Albert Museum, and the Metropolitan Museum in New York and her prices have steadily increased with demand over the past years. This stunning and beautifully crafted Danish tea bowl shaped bowl is decorated in mottled tenmoku style glazes on a brown ground and epitomises both the style and quality produced by Eva Staehr-Nielsen and believed to have been one of her early examples when she joined Saxbo in 1932. The bowl stands raised on a narrow round base with an unglazed rim and slightly recessed and glazed base. The body of the bowl is thinly constructed and is of tall form with a flared rim. The body of the bowl is beautifully decorated in brown with splashes of tenmoku glaze in a semi-matt finish. The bowl has an impressed Saxbo mark with DENMARK and is numbered 12 with two dots which we believe may have been an early mark for Staehr-Nielsen. Provenance: from a choice collection of Scandinavian pottery amassed by a private gentleman who sadly now has insufficient space to display these fine pieces. In good condition with light wear associated with age and use.
