About the Item

Featuring the deep blue, red and green jewel-tones for which he was famous, this rare and important footed enamel dish was created by the great master of enamel painting, Karl Drerup. Here, Drerup depicts two fishermen on an exotic vessel, pulling in a net of fish. The bird to one side, the cubist sun overhead and the brilliance of the scene shows the influence of Picasso, Chagall, and Folk Art. Drerup immigrated to America from Germany in 1937, his anti-Nazi activism and his wife's Jewish heritage forcing them to leave Germany. In his early years in America, he worked in ceramics with Franz Joseph Von Tury, but later he focused on enamel painting, prompted in part by a conversation with Tommi Parzinger, who noted that no one was creating fine enamels in New York. Drerup moved to New Hampshire in the 1940s and there he created a stream of brilliantly-hued scenes of stylized animals and humans, often in mythological or fantastical scenes.
