Footed Centerpiece Bowl, Early American Studio Art Glass, 1986

About the Item

Footed art glass bowl with ruffled rim features a free form flowing abstract pattern in burgundy red glass, reminiscent of Favrille glass with pulled feather elements, that accentuates the organic, elegant shape of the wide rim and sculptural, concise lines of the bowl. Both the bowl and clear circular foot with round element are decorated with iridescent lustre finish. The bowl is signed and dated on the bottom, Ornamental Blown Glass, 1986; it is in very good vintage condition and is ready to be displayed. Rare, striking example of early American studio art glass, with strong Post-Modern influence, and a contemporary take on the American Art Nouveau glass tradition, will be a thoughtful gift to a collector or Modern Art enthusiast, or a great addition to various interiors, from Traditional to Art Deco, Victorian, Contemporary, Modern, Transitional, or Collected. Ornamental Blown Glass (OBG) was a hot glass blowing studio, located in Lynwood, WA, just outside of Seattle, in Pacific Northwest area, one of the hotspots of American studio art glass movement. Starting from their first workshop in 1971, Pilchuck Glass School, now the premier glassblowing school in the nation, is considered largely responsible for Seattle’s reputation as a hotbed of glass art. The glass institutions and studios in the area have flourished, including the influential Pratt Fine Arts Center, which opened in Seattle in 1976 with glassblowing classes and a hot shop. The OBG studio employed some well-known artists, such as Mariusz Rynkiewicz and Jack Pine, who worked there when the Seattle glass community was expanding before starting their own studios. Mariusz Rynkiewicz started as a gaffer at Ornamental Blown Glass, and worked there from 1989 until 1995. In 1992, he studied with Dante Marioni at the Pilchuck Glass School in Stanwood, Washington, and in 1993 - with Lino Tagliapietra at Pratt Fine Art Center in Seattle, where Mariusz became an instructor of glass blowing. Jack Pine worked for both Ornamental Blown Glass in Seattle and Maytum Glass Studio in Boulder, Colorado, before opening his own studio.

Nicholson Fused Glass Bowl, 1992, American Art Studio Glass
By Rick & Janet Nicholson
Located in Clifton Springs, NY
Vintage glass bowl in biomorphic shape was created by Rick and Janet Nickolson in 1992; it features a pair of abstract patterns in pink, cream, and white glass fused on thin, almost transparent green glass background. The green color deepens around the heavier base, creating a contrast with the light, ethereal body of the bowl. The bowl is signed and dated on the base near the bottom. Rick and Janet Nicholson of Nicholson Blown Glass Studio have worked together as a successful team since 1979. Rick first studied glass with Don Hartman and the University of Southern California and was a TA at Pilchuck Glass School for Dale Chihuly and Fritz Dreisbach in 1981; he continued to study with such notables as Therman Statom...

Joseph Morel for Zellique Pulled Feather Bowl, American Studio Art Glass, 1988
By Zellique Studio 1
Located in Clifton Springs, NY
Vintage art glass bowl features striking Art Deco style 5-lobed pulled feather decor in blue, purple, and Bordeau red glass, enclosed in clear glass. The center of the bowl has a convex element, adding an Op-Art element to the composition. The design of the bowl is reminiscent of the pulled feather pieces that Morel created while at Orient & Plume, but the choice of semi-transparent and clear glass instead of colored iridescent glass, used in his earlier works, shows a Post Modern influence and a more contemporary take on the American Art Nouveau glass tradition. The bowl is signed in etching by the artist on the bottom with "Zellique Studio JM 8-1988 FBVI98". Joseph Morel is an established American glass artist, based in California. He began his career in glass artist at California State University, Chico; after graduating in 1973, he worked at Orient & Flume Art Glass, an internationally renowned glass studio, where he was mentored by visiting European glass masters over the next seven years. Orient & Flume early work was directed toward recreating the silver-luster or iridescent glass of turn-of-the-century artists like Tiffany, Steuben, and Loetz, for example, Tiffany Cypriote glass and Steuben Aurenes. The company regularly drew in other artists with various skills in working glass, creating learning opportunities for their employees. In 1980, Morel opened Zellique Art Glass in Benicia, California, where he was able to utilize his skills a glass designer. As the American art glass movement grew, other glass studios opened in Bay Area in 1980s - 1990s; in early 2000s there were five glassblowing studios in Benicia: Zellique Art Glass, Lindsay Art Glass, Nourot Glass, Opal, and Smyers Glass...

Carl Erickson Green Bowl Ashtray American Art Studio Glass 1940s-1950s
Located in Clifton Springs, NY
Sculptural, heavy Mid Century Modern dark green glass decorative bowl or ashtray was created by Carl Erickson for Erickson Glass Works. The bowl is decorated with controlled bubbles that are radiating from its center; four symmetrically placed indentations can serve as cigarette rests. The pontil is ground. The bowl is in good vintage condition with some age-appropriate signs of wear on the bottom. It is unsigned, as vast majority of Ericson piece were, and is missing its sticker, but can be clearly identified by multiple printed and online catalogues and other resources. Carl Erickson (1899-1966) worked at Pairpoint Manufacturing Company, joining his father as an apprentice and spending the next 20 years developing a high level of craftsmanship, including precision use of controlled bubbles, a technique often associated with Pairpoint, that was widely used by Erickson in his own glass designs. In the early 1930s he was employed by Libbey Glass and from 1937 - by the Blenko Glass Company. After leaving Blenko, Carl founded his own art glass studio in Bremen, Ohio in 1943. Erickson glass was hand blown, so no two pieces could be identical. Erickson made reproductions for a number of museums, including the Smithsonian Institution of Washington, D.C., Old Sturbridge Museum, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Corning Museum of Glass, and the Ohio State Historical Society Museum. Many of his glass creations have been selected for display at several distinguished museums, and in 1953 a traveling display...
