French Apothecary Marble Mortar with Brass Pestle, 19th Century

About

A splendid purple marble apothecary mortar with brass pestle, 1800s. The large, solid marble is a reddish purple with thick white seams and thin black veins. Either side has a semi-circular projected handle. The entire outside is rough hewn, with a fabulous texture. The inside and rim are polished smooth. The well itself is fairly shallow, meaning that the base is thick and very heavy. The piece comes with a molded solid brass pestle.
