Gilbert Menetier French Art Deco Ceramic Bowl, Signed

About the Item

Beautiful French Art Deco bowl by Gilbert Méténier, signed. This Art Deco period piece features magnificent colors and is made with flamed sandstone. Gilbert Méténier, born in Moulins on September 30, 1876, son of Louis Méténier (1844-1922) also a French potter and ceramist who lived in Gannat (Allier). In 1920 Gilbert succeeded his father and ensured the reputation of Méténier sandstone. The activity continued until 1940, when Gilbert Méténier would have destroyed all the molds "so that they do not fall into the hands of the occupier"; he then went to live in Saint-Raphaël, where we lost track of him. Méténier sandstones, sometimes called "Gannat blues", are all the more sought after as their amateurs are sure to find only authentic pieces since, due to the destruction of the molds and dies, it is not technically possible to make copies of the pieces created by this factory between 1920 and 1939. Measures: 8" Diameter x 2 3/4" Height.
