Glazed Ceramic Chawan Tea Bowl by Toshiko Takaezu
About the Item
A small elegant glazed ceramic tea bowl (chawan) by Japanese American artist Toshiko Takaezu (American, 1922 - 2011). The well-balanced form is hand built and shows just a slight irregularity. The surface is covered with a white opaque glaze with a slight yellow tint and accentuated with a bold dark stroke that morphs into green, reminiscent of ink calligraphy. The abstract pattern is echoed in the interior with free form coloring ranging from beige to a light aqua green. There is also fine cracking across the surface typical in Toshiko's pottery piece. Small but lovely example of the artist's work.
Toshiko Takaezu was heavily influenced by the Japanese ceramic tradition and aesthetics. The bowl is signed with the artist's cypher on the underside.
