About the Item

Known for his public art installations, ceramic sculpture, photography, and mixed-media constructions, Gregor Turk often incorporates mapping imagery and cultural markings into his artwork. His response to his surroundings, whether in his hometown, Atlanta, or while traveling, serves as a major impetus for much of what he creates. Projects include producing a significant body of artwork resulting from hiking and biking along the course of the 1,270 mile section of the 49th parallel that defines the U.S./Canadian border, photographing blank billboards along fictitious Interstate 50, and making thousands of rubbings from text and imagery from the ubiquitous historical plaques and markers found in American cities. "Since 2012 I have been utilizing rubber (repurposed bicycle inner-tubes) as a medium. Both contrasting and complementing my work with earthen materials (ceramics), the rubber work references mobility, transit, and the in-betweenness of places. Sustainability and environmental issues also come into play using a synthetic material. The bike tubes are split open and stretched out onto wrapped panels and bound globes or they may be used whole and ruched onto panels and other forms. On occasion flat-wrapped pieces are painted (Retrace Series)." The Biggio bowls are comprised of layers of recycled bicycle inner tubes. The layered effect references topography, water currents and wood grain.
