About the Item
A beautifully hand-turned bowl made in Finland from curly birch, one of the country’s most prized native woods. The surface reveals the flame-like figuring characteristic of visakoivu, with its natural shimmer and lively pattern. Gently asymmetrical in form, the bowl combines precision craftsmanship with a quiet organic presence, every angle revealing a different rhythm in the grain.
Made by hand in the 1970s–1980s, this piece represents the essence of Finnish craft tradition: honest, functional, and timelessly elegant. Both decorative and practical, it works as a sculptural centerpiece or an everyday serving bowl, carrying the warmth and depth that only natural wood can convey.
Curly birch is a rare Finnish hardwood prized for its complex, shimmering grain: the result of a natural mutation found in less than one birch tree in a thousand. Long cherished by local artisans, it has been used in fine furniture, utensils, and art objects since the 18th century. Each piece is truly unique.
