About the Item
Heikki Orvola studied ceramics at an art and design school.
After graduating at the top of his class in 1968, he began his career as a designer at Nuutajärvi at the invitation of Kaj Franck.
He remained there until 1983, designing numerous products and art pieces.
He has continued to provide design services as a freelancer at Nuutajarvi ever since.
From 1976 to 1984, he worked at Jarvanpaan Emali on enamelware, and from 1984 to 1995 at Marimekko on fabrics.
He also continued his miniature textile works, which began in the early 1980s and led to his design work at Marimekko, and from 1987 to 1993, he worked at Arabia on ceramics, among other projects.
Additionally, he has been teaching ceramics and glass design at an art and design school for many years.
He has received numerous awards, including the Pro Finlandia Medal and the Kai Franck Design Award.
This piece was first exhibited at the Kluuvin Gallery in Helsinki in 1985.
The exhibition primarily showcased fabrics designed for Marimekko, and this glass work was one of the few unique pieces on display.
The thick, heavy glass has a soft texture with a frosted finish on the blue glass.
The minimalist elliptical form is designed to harmonise with the graphical patterns of the fabric.
This design was created two years later in 1987 and shares similarities with Heikki Orvola's iconic KIVI design.
