About the Item

This richly decorated tray was created by celebrated French porcelain manufacturer Jacob Petit. Topped by an impressive gilt Chinese dragon, the piece is distinguished by finely hand-painted scenes depicting songbirds and floral arrangements against a green ground. The tray was originally designed to hold jewelry, with holes in the dragon's back for brooches and a scallop shell meant to hold a pocket watch. A master colorist who worked as a painter at the prestigious Sèvres factory before opening his own, Petit combined color with neoclassical, Rococo and chinoiserie motifs to create works of unparalleled vibrancy and beauty. Features blue "J.P." monogram mark Circa 1835 8 1/2" wide x 12" deep x 5” high
