Large Masons Ironstone Punch Bowl in Curled Leaf & Flower Basket ptn, circa 1838

About the Item

This is a Large twin Handled open Punch Bowl made by Mason's Ironstone in a beautiful pattern called: Curled Leaf and flower Basket, made in the early 19th century, William 1Vth period, circa 1835 to 1840.. Large Mason's Punch bowls in this shape with a Pedestal foot are rare. The bowl is circular with an everted wavy rim and raised on a good pedestal circular foot. The body is moulded with slight vertical fluting and has two substantial carrying handles, one either side. This piece would not have had a lid. The bowl is decorated inside and outside with the Curled Leaf and Flower Basket pattern which is a distinctive and decorative floral pattern, number 3198, as illustrated on Page 61 of "A Guide to Mason's Patent Ironstone Patterns" published by The Mason's Collectors' Club. The pattern is mainly hand-painted with typical bold and striking enamels with hand gilded detail to the handles and rims. The bowl carriers Mason's rectangular crown printed mark in puce, together with the pattern number 3198, hand painted in red. This is a large, substantial and striking piece of Mason's Ironstone dating to circa 1835/40, weighing about 1.7 Kg unpacked.
