About the Item
Large Early 20th Century Turkana Wooden Bowl with Leather Handle
East Africa, Northwestern Kenya, Turkana Culture, early 20th century CE
A finely crafted wooden bowl from the Turkana people of northwestern Kenya, carved from a single piece of wood with remarkable thin walls and lightweight construction—ideal for the mobile lifestyle of this nomadic culture. The vessel features a leather carrying loop and an old repair with metal wire, attesting to its long-term use and the value placed upon it by its owner.
The surface displays stippled bands and contrasting blackened motifs, while the interior retains a slightly waxy texture and faint earthy scent, suggesting use in the collection and storage of milk—an essential resource in Turkana pastoral traditions centered on cattle, goats, and sheep. Such vessels were deeply personal, often passed down through generations as treasured household possessions.
