Mancioli Italy Pheasant lidded Bowl / Tureen With Tail Ladle Vintage 1970s
About the Item
Vintage pheasant tureen with tail ladle was made in Italy by Mancioli Company. The bowl with the lid on forms a shape of a pheasant; the ladle forms its tail. It is decorated in rustic style in pink and cranberry red on white body with elaborate gold accents throughout. It is smaller than a regular soup tureen, but rather close in size to sauce of gravy bowl. It is marked on the bottom with manufacturer logo and mold/catalog numbers. The mark dates back to late 1970s; it was in use until early 1990s.
Mancioli Company was formed in 1946 by Natale Mancioli and Bruno Magnani in Montelupo, one of major centers of Italian pottery since 15th century; some of their staff were former employees of Bitossi and Fratelli Fanciullacci. The firm was manufacturing traditional, rustic, and modern ceramic tableware; starting in 1950s-1960s non-utilitarian items, such as vases and statuary, were introduced for home decor. Along with Bitossi, Bagni, and Laca, Mancioli was one of Italian ceramics manufacturers associated with Raymor.
Under the direction of Luciano Mancioli the company started working with multiple artists and designers, creating modern, unique pieces. Eva Zeisel, Nanni Valentini, Sergio Dello Strologo, Ingrid Attemberg, Fernando Farulli, and Luigi Massoni were among the artists who contributed to Mancioli designs. In 1980s the company received commissions from museums.
The tureen is in excellent vintage condition. It measures 10.8" long (xx" including the ladle) and 6.7" high with the lid on, and 4.5" deep.
