About the Item

Rare and richly finished in a deep red glaze with tooled silver overlay, this exceedingly rare bowl produced by the Gustavsberg porcelain works in Sweden features a mermaid and fish on its side, and a starfish circumnavigated by circles of stylized waves inside. The artist was Wilhelm Kåge, a remarkably creative and productive artist who was named the artistic director of Gustavsberg in 1917, remaining there until 1949. In the late 1920s, he developed the Argenta line of porcelain pieces, typically glazed in a brilliant turquoise color with applied decorations in silver, often of mermaids and other aquatic creatures. Very rarely, Kåge designed pieces in this deep, rich red glaze, again with the silver overlay, beautifully tooled to give great detail to the scene. The bowl is well-marked on the bottom.

"Mermaid with Dolphins & Starfish", Rare & Ambitious Art Deco Platter, Mequinion
By Roger Mequinion
Located in Philadelphia, PA
Large and bold, this Art Deco ceramic platter featuring a mermaid trumpeting a shell and embracing a dolphin while another dolphin and starfish are cavorting in the water nearby, was made Roger Mequinion, who produced an entirely unique series of ceramic pieces with thick layers of glaze that he sandblasted to create a layered, three-dimensional design. Here, the outer glaze is a deep red color, but the sandblasting reveals layers of light red and white underneath. Mequinion was the first sculptor to work for René Lalique, and helped the master develop a sandblasting technique for his early glass...
