About the Item

A beautiful, sculptural vintage Italian Murano hand blown bowl in style of Flavio Poli for Seguso Vetri D'Arte was made in sommerso technique of blue glass with controlled bubble effect, known as 'a bolle', and shimmering gold inclusions enclosed inside the clear/pale green glass layer. The bowl features tactile oblong shape with 4 biomorphic clear glass pieces applied to the sides. The clear glass portion of the bowl glows in UV light, indicating that it contains uranium. This piece will work very well in any style interior or would make a great gift for an art and design enthusiast. Similar pieces are shown in the online archives provided by Archivi del Centro Studi del Vetro. Flavio Poli (1900-1984) is best known for his work as artistic director at the Seguso Vetri d'Arte glass factory in Murano, near Venice. He joined the company in 1934 and worked there for over 20 years, developing a distinctive style that combined traditional Venetian glassmaking techniques with modern design sensibilities.

Vitrix Hot Glass Studio Organic Folded Edge Bowl, New York Art Glass
By Thomas Kelly
Located in Clifton Springs, NY
Striking Organic Modern bowl was hand blown with fluid, folded edge. The colored yellow and brown glass inclusions were placed in abstract, graphic pattern on peachy beige background, with the whole structure enclosed in clear glass in sommerso technique. Minimal color palette balances complex shape of the piece, and the subtle flow of the pattern guides the eye along the folded glass surfaces. The bowl is signed and dated by the artist in etching on the bottom. Thomas Kelly is an established glass artist working in Vitrix Hot Glass studio in Corning, New York. He started in the glass studios of Alex Brand and Thomas Buechner where he had the opportunity to learn from two distinctly different artists, each having their own unique talents; Kelly worked for 10 years with Thomas Buechner III at Vitrix Hot Glass Studio, developing his glass working skills and aesthetic sensitivity. At Vitrix, visiting artists such as Lino Tagliapietra and Fritz Dreisbach...

Nicholson Fused Glass Bowl, 1992, American Art Studio Glass
By Rick & Janet Nicholson
Located in Clifton Springs, NY
Vintage glass bowl in biomorphic shape was created by Rick and Janet Nickolson in 1992; it features a pair of abstract patterns in pink, cream, and white glass fused on thin, almost transparent green glass background. The green color deepens around the heavier base, creating a contrast with the light, ethereal body of the bowl. The bowl is signed and dated on the base near the bottom. Rick and Janet Nicholson of Nicholson Blown Glass Studio have worked together as a successful team since 1979. Rick first studied glass with Don Hartman and the University of Southern California and was a TA at Pilchuck Glass School for Dale Chihuly and Fritz Dreisbach in 1981; he continued to study with such notables as Therman Statom...
