About the Item

This wooden bowl is believed to have been made in Southeast Asia around the 20th century. It was previously owned by a Japanese collector. I was immediately drawn to its striking presence and raw strength—it was an instant decision to acquire it. While the specific type of wood is unknown, it is clearly a dense and heavy material. The bowl is carved from a single solid block of wood, resulting in a thick, substantial form. The surface bears rough chisel marks throughout, a testament to its handcrafted nature, which gives it a bold sculptural beauty. A thin layer of coating has been applied, giving it a subtle, understated sheen that shifts gently with the light. Rather than being purely functional, the shallow, wide shape highlights the object’s sculptural qualities. The base is flat, allowing the piece to be turned over and used as a display stand for objects such as Buddhist statues or other ornaments. As seen in the reference photo, using it as a pedestal introduces a sense of calm and stillness to the space. There is a natural hole in the center of the interior, caused by the gradual aging of the wood. We consider this not a flaw, but part of the bowl’s character—evidence of time etched into the material. This wooden piece brings the raw strength of natural materials and primitive form into any space. Whether placed quietly on its own or used to display a single flower, it serves as a striking presence. As an art piece or display base, it’s a versatile addition that suits a wide range of interior styles. Weight: 7.75 kg We mainly sell old Japanese items, but also items from around the world.
