Persian Brown Block Tray by Henry Wilson

About the Item

Persian Brown Block Tray by Henry Wilson Limited Edition of 50 Dimensions. W 30 x D 18 x H 7 cm Materials: Persian Brown marble. Available in Classico travertine and Persian Brown marble. Block Tray is a limited edition of fifty pieces inspired by Modernist sculpture and architecture – particularly the detailing of 1960s façades. It also evokes the work of Carlo Scarpa, whose precise geometries and skillful manipulation of light and shade leavened volume and gravity with pleasing understatement. As Philip Johnson summarised, the Venetian architect could ‘‘make poetry out of the smallest rod or piece of stone.’’ Amply proportioned and crafted from solid stone, Block Tray offers two diagonally sectioned concavities, with a generous shadow line lending a floating effect to its substantial, plinth-like form. It’s a perfect receptacle for everyday valuables – keys, card case, coin wallet – or for clusters of stationery, collectibles, or smoking materials. Henry Wilson's work combines a rational, democratic utility with an element of sculptural expression. There is a clear form and function in our products, but it’s important they also have feeling. We are interested in the awkward beauty that comes from something made by hand. We like to explore how imperfection can be introduced into an industrial process, to make something at scale that retains a sense of individual charm. Permanent collections and exhibitions - Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences, Sydney, Australia - Art Gallery of Western Australia, Perth, Australia - 'Sempering' XXI Triennale, MUDEC, 2016, Milan, Italy.
