About the Item
This elegant Scandinavian Modern stoneware bowl was crafted by SYCO Keramik in Strömstad, Sweden, during the 1950s. Its sleek, upward-sweeping form with sculpted oval handles reflects the refined minimalism of mid-century Nordic design. Finished in a lustrous merlot red glaze, the surface shimmers with rich tonal depth, shifting between burgundy and plum as light moves across it.
A hallmark of SYCO’s craftsmanship, the piece combines functional design with sculptural beauty, embodying the studio’s modernist ethos under founder Arnold Wiig (1924–1990). Both timeless and striking, it serves beautifully as a decorative centerpiece or refined accent in any interior.
ABOUT SYCO
Founded in 1945 by Norwegian designer Arnold Wiig (1924–1990), SYCO began as AB Syco and quickly became one of Sweden’s leading post-war ceramic studios. Originally known for its innovative “breathing pots,” the company expanded its production in 1949 to include decorative wares, household ceramics, and toys. Under the later names Syco Keramik (1949–1961) and Nya Syco (1961–1968), the workshop flourished, developing an impressive catalog of over a thousand designs and exporting widely across Europe, particularly to Germany and England.
