About the Item

Set of Two Early 1940s White Matte Pottery Bowls by Hamilton Achilles Wolf Set of two hand thrown mid-century pottery bowls by California artist Hamilton Achille Wolf (American, 1883 - 1967), these two bowls exemplify an organic modern aesthetic with a white matte finish, natural texture, and minimalist design. The smaller bowl is incised with a simple wave motif around the top rim, while the larger bowl has no pattern. The bowls are shaped with natural irregularities and are not perfectly symmetrical, showing the hand of the artist in each unique piece. Unglazed. He threw these pots while teaching at the California College of Arts and Crafts and came from a collection I acquired in 1990, from San Francisco. I have purchased and owned a 25 paintings by the artist over 35 years including his abstract expressionist works and portraits. I am very familiar with his signature. He typically signed his work "Wolf" in semi-script style. These are certified by Robert Azensky Fine Art to be by Hamilton Achille Wolf. Each bowl is incised on base with the artist's signature "Wolf". The larger bowl measures 3"H x 5"D. The smaller bowl measures 2"H x 3.5"D. A Post war California artist, Hamilton Achille Wolf studied at Columbia University, New York, National Academy Design, Art Students' League, and the Academie Colarossi in Paris. Wolf taught at the Los Angeles School of Art & Design and was the head of the Art Department of the University of Washington, Seattle. In 1928 he joined the faculty of the California College of Arts & Crafts. Selected Group Exhibitions: 60th Annual Painting and Sculpture Exhibition of the San Francisco Art Association at the San Francisco Museum of Art, 1940; 61st Annual Painting and Sculpture Exhibition of the San Francisco Art Association at the San Francisco Museum of Art, 1941; 62nd Annual Painting and Sculpture Exhibition of the San Francisco Art Association at the San Francisco Museum of Art, 1942; 65th Annual Painting and Sculpture Exhibition of the San Francisco Art Association at the San Francisco Museum of Art, 1945; First Spring Annual Exhibition, California Palace of The Legion of Honor 1946; Second Annual Exhibition of Painting, California Palace of The Legion of Honor 1948; 70th Annual Painting and Sculpture Exhibition of the San Francisco Art Association at the San Francisco Museum of Art, 1951; 71st Annual Painting and Sculpture Exhibition of the San Francisco Art Association at the San Francisco Museum of Art, 1952; The Art Bank of the San Francisco Art Association, 1958, 59.
