Simon Gate for Orrefors Thousand Windows Art Deco Crystal Bowl, in Box

About the Item

Simon Gate designed "Tusen Fönster”, or Thousand Windows, series for Orrefors in 1932. It is a classic example of Scandinavian Modern interpretation of Art Deco design elements, with its geometric cut glass patterns reflecting and refracting light and creating a luminous sculptural display. Thousand Windows was initially produced in 1930s and then revived in 1950s, with some pieces being in production until early 1990s. The clear crystal bowl is marked with the red paper sticker at the base and "Orrefors", SG initials, and model number in etching on the bottom; it comes in its original box. The red label with Orrefors Sweden and the Orre bird represents their solid lead crystal production and art glass; the label was used since 1950s into 1980s. The use of two initials as a code for the designer was used from 1980, dating the bowl to 1980s. Simon Gate (1883-1945) was a renowned Swedish glass designer, who studied art at the National College of Art, Craft, and Design in Stockholm in the early 20th century, and from 1909 - at the Royal Swedish Academy Art School; he worked as a graphic designer before being recruited by the Orrefors director Albert Ahlin in 1916. In his tenure as Orrefors artistic director he built the firm foundation for Sweden’s substantial modern glass industry alongside Edvard Hald, Vicke Lindstrand, Knut Bergqvist, and many others. Gate designed a wide range of utilitarian and decorative glass during his three decades at Orrefors, and in 1920s Gate, along with Hald, and master glassblower Knut Bergqvist, invented the iconic Graal glass technique. Gate won a Grand Prix at the 1925 Exposition des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes in Paris. His designs are in the collections of major museums.
