About the Item

The finest and most dramatic piece of enamel painting we have seen by master artist Karl Drerup, this large bowl depicts a spouting whale amidst a gorgeous sea of waves in shades of cobalt, cerulean, Mediterranean blue and pale blue, framed by a whaling boat and a seagull overhead. Drerup immigrated to America from Germany in 1937, his anti-Nazi activism and his wife's Jewish heritage forcing them to leave Germany. In his early years in America, he worked in ceramics with Franz Joseph Von Tury, but later he focused on enamel painting, prompted in part by a conversation with Tommi Parzinger, who noted that no one was creating fine enamels in New York. Drerup moved to New Hampshire in the 1940s and there he created a stream of brilliantly-hued scenes of stylized animals and humans, often in mythological or fantastical scenes.

"Triton with Dolphin", Art Deco Low Bowl in Blue with Aquatic Creatures, France
By Roger Mequinion
Located in Philadelphia, PA
Bold and striking, this unique low bowl or plate depicts a form of Triton that is part man, part horse and part fish -- known as an ichthyocentaur -- who is cavorting in the sea with a dolphin and starfish, with rows of waves below and around him. The artist was Roger Mequinion, who produced an entirely unique series of ceramic pieces with thick layers of glaze that he sandblasted to create a layered, three-dimensional design. Here, the outer glaze is a deep blue color, but the sandblasting reveals layers of light blue and white underneath. Mequinion was the first sculptor to work for René Lalique, and helped the master develop a sandblasting technique for his early glass...
