Taş Havan (Turkish Stone Mortar)

About the Item

This stone mortar, dating back to turn of the century, is sourced from Central Anatolia where it has been used by generations of families to create the flavor that marks traditional local cuisine. This piece is made from durable stone with a deep, square-shaped bowl and winged edges. The mortar & pestle has been used since ancient times to crush, grind, and mix spices, grains, and herbs to flavor food, infuse elixirs with medicinal properties, and add material form to magical spells. While the mortar & pestle are still key tools in Turkish kitchens, these one-of-a-kind pieces make delightful catchalls & countertop conversation starters in a modern home. *One-of-a-kind and marked by time, each of these pieces will show patina and natural imperfections. From oil stains to oxidation, we consider these alterations to be portals into a time long ago.
