A tasteful wooden bowl from Southeast Asia / 20th century / tray-shaped object

About the Item

This wooden bowl is believed to have been made in Southeast Asia around the 20th century. It was owned by a Japanese antique collector, and its rugged yet warm shape is impressive. It is made by hollowing out a single thick board, and is made of heavy, solid wood. The material is unknown, but it is extremely hard, and its density and strength can be felt just by touching it. The shallowly carved grain of the interior has beautiful patterns carved by nature, reminding us of the passage of time over the years. The overall form is flat and spread out like a tray, evoking a sense of human activity. The bottom of the bowl is gently bulging, and when placed on a flat surface, it may slightly rattle (please see the picture for details). There are square notches on both ends, where another material has been embedded. Although modest in size, the appearance of this wooden bowl has a presence not found in other wooden bowls. As an item that brings a sense of natural materiality and quiet strength to a space, it is a picture just by randomly placing it in a corner of an interior. For example, we recommend placing it at the entrance or on a shelf in the living room with a single flower of the season, or displaying it as an objet d'art in its solid state. Weight: 3.75 kg
