Francois Raoul Larche (1860-1912) LA SEVE or Métamorphose de Daphné Gilt Bronze Art Nouveau Sculpture Cast, Gilt Bronze or Marble base France, c. 1900, Signed "Raoul Larche," numbered B917 and with Siot-Decauville foundry mark. Bronze Height: 12 Inches (30 cm) On a marble base, total ht. 13 in. Condition: Excellent La Sève depicts Daphne at the moment she asked the Gods to turn her into a laurel tree to resist the advances of Apollo. Admired for its organic Art Nouveau-inspired form, the plaster model was exhibited to critical acclaim at the Paris Salon of 1893 and a marble Siot-Decauville cast La Sève. François Raoul Larche studied at the Ecole Nationale des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1878, before debuting his work at the Société des Artistes Français in 1881, and exhibiting regularly at the Salon between 1884 and 1911. His work was acclaimed at the 1900 Paris Exposition Universelle, where he was awarded the gold medal for sculpture. A rare and large pate de verre molded sculpture of the mythological God Pan. Very thick and heavy; this glass piece is primarily bluish green with yellow, reds and orange. The likeness is uncanny with perfectly modeled facial features and traces of his goat horns. This piece was said to exhibit at the Brooklyn Museum in 1971 but there is no documentation. The mask is stamped Decorchemont on his right cheek. For serious collectors of Art Deco - Art Nouveau rare and beautiful glass, circa 1915.
