About the Item
Ultra-Rare 1950 Reed & Barton #94 Matte Black Enamel Teardrop Candy Dish – Designed by John Prip
This exceedingly rare Reed & Barton #94 teardrop candy dish is a striking example of mid-century American design, crafted circa 1950 and attributed to the celebrated silversmith and industrial designer John Prip. Known for merging Danish modernism with American innovation, Prip’s work at Reed & Barton marked a revolutionary period for the Massachusetts-based company, resulting in some of the most collectible and enduring modernist designs in 20th-century silver.
This particular example is rendered in matte black enamel—a highly desirable and seldom-seen colorway—set against a silver-plated base. The dish retains its original, velvety matte finish with no loss to the enamel, which is an uncommon condition for these pieces. The sculptural teardrop silhouette with subtly raised feet reflects Prip’s signature style: refined, functional, and visually captivating from every angle. The dish remains in excellent vintage condition, with only slight expected wear to the base. The silver has been left with its natural patina, enhancing its authenticity and depth of character.
Reed & Barton, one of America’s oldest and most prestigious silversmiths, rose to prominence in the 19th and 20th centuries for their exceptional craftsmanship. Their pieces were chosen for White House table settings, including those of the Kennedy administration, and presented as presidential gifts—further cementing their legacy in American decorative arts.
Whether used as a modernist candy dish, jewelry holder, or simply as a decorative object, this rare piece is a testament to mid-century American design excellence and a must-have for collectors of Reed & Barton, John Prip, or modernist silver.
Condition: Excellent vintage condition. Enamel is intact with no loss. Minor wear to the underside of the base as expected. Silver has not been over-polished and retains a natural tarnish.
