About the Item

Vivika and Otto Heino stoneware xlarge plate Decorated with a great incised abstract design in cobalt and iron oxide glazes., making this a really dynamic piece. It was purchased from the estate of a Finnish architect living in California. Excellent condition, with no damage. Signed by both Vivika and Otto Heino. Otto Heino (April 20, 1915 – July 16, 2009) and Vivika Heino (June 27, 1910 – September 1, 1995) were artists working in ceramics, mainly in California. Vivika was born in New York and Otto in Connecticut to Finnish immigrants parents. They collaborated as a husband-and-wife team for thirty-five years. Otto and Vivika moved to California in 1952, where Vivika replaced Glen Lukens, head of ceramics department of the University of Southern California. She remained there for three years. Otto also taught at the university during this time. Vivika also worked at Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles for eight years. After returning to the east coast for a while, they returned to California and spent the rest of their years operating their studio in Ojai.
