About the Item
A square travertine bowl from the 1970s of Italian origin, epitomizing the era's affinity for natural materials and minimalist design. Here are the key features of the bowl:
The bowl is crafted from travertine, a type of limestone known for its distinct porous texture and natural warmth. The stone’s earthy tones add a touch of organic elegance to the piece.
This bowl features a unique square shape, contrasting with the more common circular designs. The center of the square block is carved out to form a shallow, circular basin. The combination of the square exterior and round interior creates an interesting geometric contrast.
The surface of the bowl retains the characteristic texture of travertine, with its naturally occurring pits and grooves. This texture adds depth and a tactile quality to the piece, highlighting its natural origins.
The bowl has a warm, beige color typical of travertine, with subtle variations and natural imperfections that enhance its aesthetic appeal. The coloration is consistent with the material's natural appearance, providing a neutral yet sophisticated look.
The edges of the square are sharp and well-defined, giving the bowl a modern, clean-lined appearance. The finish is matte, in keeping with the natural look and feel of travertine.
This bowl can serve multiple purposes, from a decorative centerpiece to a functional item for holding small objects. Its distinct shape and natural material make it a versatile addition to various interior styles, from contemporary to rustic.
The bowl’s substantial thickness and weight reflect the density and durability of travertine. Its square design adds a modern touch, making it not only a functional piece but also a statement object in any setting.
This 1970s Italian travertine bowl is a perfect example of how natural materials can be used to create timeless, elegant pieces. Its combination of geometric design and organic texture makes it a versatile and attractive addition to any home decor.

Midcentury Travertine Ashtray in the Style of Fratelli Mannelli, Italy, 1970s
By Fratelli Mannelli
Located in Roma, IT
Sculptural Ashtray attributable to the historic company Fratelli Mannelli, specialized in the processing of travertine.
Known for its collaboration with the designer Enzo Mari, who designed a series of stylized travertine animals, this Manifcaturer has also produced many other furnishing elements such as ashtrays, coffee tables and lamps.
The ashtray that we offer for design and material seems to be part of this vast production of this manufacturer.
The ashtray has a classic quadrangular shape but the distinctive element that distinguishes it and makes it more similar to a sculpture than a simple ashtray is in the handmade carved elements.
There is a small central basin that connects with those created to be able to place the cigarettes laterally, but above all the lines that intersect each other as in a sound sculpture by Pinuccio Sciola.
