Antique Japanese Porcelain Dish with Warriors Top Quality Work Japan Marked Base

About the Item

Painted scene from the The 47 Ronin. The mark reads Dai Nippon Watano made painted by Motoshige. Watano Genemon was a merchant from the Kutani area. He initially established a shop in Kobe in the 1870s then moved to Yokohama around 1880. There the business was taken over by his son Watano Kichiji (1859-1934). Unlike most Yokohama merchants, Watano continued to procure primarily from Kutani and many of its products are marked Kutani or have a Kutani painter's name on them. Although Kichiji lived until 1934, his name does not appear on the list of Yokohama merchants in the Showa period and thus his business likely ended before or at the time of the great earthquake in 1923. Very thinly potted. Additional information: Material: Porcelain & Pottery Region of Origin: Japan Period: 19th century Age: 19th century Condition: Good Dimension: Ø 21.7 x 2.5 H cm
