About the Item

This large, round tray dates to the early 20th century and is a simple example of Burmese lacquerware (pan yun). The tray is formed of thin bamboo strips that have been woven and coiled into shape, held in place with a putty of lacquer resin (thit-si) and sawdust, and finished with layer upon layer of glossy, cinnabar red lacquer (hinthabada). Possibly originating as one layer of a stacking box, this decorative tray lives on with simplicity of form and hand-crafted texture. Minor chips to lacquer.
