Cobalt Blue Sommerso Style Scalloped Edge Glass Dish, Sweden c1970s

About the Item

A vintage cobalt blue glass dish crafted in Sweden in the 1970s. This small glass dish showcases the "sommerso" technique, made famous by Venetian glassmakers and adopted by artisans worldwide. In this piece, a rich cobalt blue is submerged within a layer of crystal-clear glass, with each color floating perfectly to create a striking transparent border along the dish’s edge. The petal-shaped design along the rim was created by the glassmaker gently pressing the glass with a metal rod during formation, resulting in a beautifully scalloped edge. This style gained global popularity in the 1960s, with Scandinavian makers like Holmegaard and Flygfors creating notable versions. In good condition, it measures 14.5 cm in diameter and 5.5 cm high—perfect as a vide-poche to hold your trinkets, or to display and add colour.
