Gabriel Argy Rousseau, Twelve "Lotus" Decorative Plates, French Art Deco 1920s

About the Item

Superb and extremely rare set of 12 decorative pate de verre plates by Gabriel Argy Rousseau, France, Art Deco period, 1927. Each plate is decorated with a galaxy of violet, green, yellow, pink, purple, blue and black colours and a moulded decoration of lotuses, garlands and geometry. These plates represent a wonderful opportunity to create a wall decoration by hanging them professionally or framing them. While of the Art Deco period, their avant-garde and galaxy-like decor have a true decorative potential in contemporary, design or period settings. In excellent condition. All signed by the artist. Some carry the mention France. Dimensions in cm ( H x D ) : 3.2 x 24.8 Joseph Gabriel Rousseau, known as Gabriel Argy-Rousseau, born in Meslay-le-Vidame on March 17, 1885 and died in Paris on February 20, 1953, was a French sculptor, ceramist and master glassmaker who contributed to the rediscovery of pâte de verre as a major glass art of the early 20th century. Although the technique of pâte de verre dates back to antiquity, it was long forgotten. In the last quarter of the 19th century, Henri Cros and a handful of artists, often Art Nouveau ceramists such as François Décorchemont and Georges Despret, revived the technique. The last of these pioneers was Gabriel Argy-Rousseau. He is considered the only glassmaker to have developed and used the complex pâte de verre process, while other master glassmakers worked with pâte de cristal. He died a forgotten man, but left an important body of work in glassmaking that is now being rediscovered. Referenced in "Les Pâtes de Verre G. Argy Rousseau Catalogue Raisonné" by Janine Bloch-Dermant.
