"Gemini", Rare, High Style Art Deco Bronze Bas Relief by Paul Manship

About the Item

One of a series of bronze sculptural reliefs featuring Zodiac signs sculpted by Paul Manship in 1946, this piece presents the two Gemini twins as muscular children. Manship was America's most important sculptor creating high style Art Deco works in the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s and is signed and dated. The artist is perhaps best known for his magisterial "Prometheus" sculpture at Rockefeller Centre in New York, which now presides over the skating rink in winter time. The sculptor also created other works for Rockefeller Centre, as well as major pieces for the Bronx Zoo and Central Park Zoo; the Palais des Nations in Geneva, Switzerland; and Cochran Park in St. Paul, Minnesota. The piece is boldly signed and dated on the bottom edge of the scene.
