Gien Faience Decorative Plate Hand Painted in Dark Blue and Yellow



A 19th century French Gien faience decorative plate. Hand painted in yellow, green and blue and brown on a dark ground decorative dish. Renaissance style imagery includes a central medallion with a cupid and crown, allegory motifs, griffins and satyrs. The decorative plate has a double border around the rim and sculptural blue satyr heads. Gien marks on the underside and with two holes for hanging up. The Faïencerie de Gien is a French ceramic factory in the Loire Valley, founded in 1821 by the Englishman Thomas Hill.
