Japanese Imari 19th Century Charger with Mt. Fuji and Shishi Motifs

About the Item

Japanese Imari 19th century 15 1/2 inch charger, hand painted decoration in underglaze blue and over glaze enamels, highlighted in gold leaf. This Meiji platter is quite symmetrical with decoration in panels around a central floral and leaf motif. The panels alternate with scenes of Mt. Fuji and irises on a blue panel ground, and scenes of Shishi, the lion emblem, flowers and tied rice stacks framed with orange ground decorated with leaves. The reverse side has an indecipherable impressed mark, probably a fuku mark for good luck, and underglaze blue decoration.
