About the Item

A rare and beautifully matched pair of ceramic vessels by Ugo Zaccagnini, crafted in the Etruscan Revival style and finished with a lustrous copper glaze and verdigris undertones. The set includes a stemmed kantharos-style cup—its sweeping twin handles and footed base recalling ceremonial forms from ancient Greece and Etruria—and a lidded bowl with restrained proportions and a sculptural profile. The surfaces shimmer with an iridescent, timeworn glow, as if excavated from an ancient tomb, yet the execution is distinctly modern and stylized. Ugo Zaccagnini (1868–1937) was born into a renowned family of Florentine ceramicists, but his individual legacy is marked by a deep curiosity for form and historical reference. Trained as both an artist and craftsman, Zaccagnini founded his own workshop after a period at Richard-Ginori, where he absorbed a reverence for classical antiquity and the rigor of Italian design traditions. Under his direction, Zaccagnini Ceramiche flourished in Florence and later Rome, creating works that bridged past and present—reviving ancient shapes and surface techniques but abstracting and refining them to suit a modernist aesthetic. This set is a brilliant example of that vision: bold, elemental silhouettes that clearly nod to ancient pottery, but stripped of narrative decoration or excessive detailing. The proportions are almost architectural—strong and pure—while the glaze adds rich surface movement, as if unearthed after centuries. The copper luster and green patina evoke oxidized bronze and early Mediterranean metalwork, yet here they are reimagined in fired ceramic, giving the pieces a contemporary voice. In the early 20th century, designers across Europe were looking back to classical forms as part of the broader modernist project—a way to reclaim essential geometry, order, and timelessness while shedding Victorian ornamentation. Zaccagnini’s work in this mode is especially compelling: honoring the past without imitating it, and elevating historical shapes into true objects of art. These vessels are as functional as they are sculptural, ideal for display in a classical-modern interior or as standout accents in a collection focused on early 20th-century decorative arts. It is exceptionally uncommon to find a matched pair of Zaccagnini pieces from this period, especially in such a refined and historically layered style.
