About the Item

A sculptural Murano glass bowl in the form of a stylised conch shell, attributed to Alfredo Barbini, one of the most accomplished glassmakers working in Murano during the mid-20th century. Hand produced in Italy circa 1970s, this decorative object is an elegant example of vintage Murano glass artistry and reflects Barbini’s mastery of organic form and colour layering. The bowl is formed in hand-blown glass, with a pearlescent white exterior encased in clear glass — a technique known as sommerso, frequently employed in Murano glass to create depth and light refraction. The interior is rendered in a vivid green, also with a lustrous, softly iridescent surface that contrasts with the milky white outer body. The piece coils from a tight spiral base into an open, fluid lip, echoing the natural structure of a sea shell, and rests securely on a flattened polished underside. Its scale and presence make it suitable as a Murano glass centrepiece, a decorative catchall or vide-poche, or a stand-alone object of art glass sculpture. While delicate in appearance, the form is thick-walled and substantial — characteristic of Barbini’s work in the 1960s and 1970s, when he focused on organic sculptural forms with refined finishes. The piece is in good vintage condition, with no chips or cracks. Minor surface wear is present, as expected with age and handling. Dimensions: Approximately 17 cm wide × 12 cm deep × 7.5 cm high.
