Signed Alessio Tasca Blue Green Wall Plate of Stylised Horse 1950s

About the Item

This original Alessio Tasca wall plate beautifully depicts a stylised horse surrounded by foliage in what became known as 'Morelli Green' glaze on a white ground. Tasca helped to develop the Morelli glaze - this particular Blue-Green with bronze highlights that became very popular and is characteristic of Italian ceramics of the 1950s. The plate is Stamped 'Tasca' to the base. It is a fine example of Tasca's skill at figurative painting, his collaborative development of glazes and his creation of simple but beautiful ceramic forms. This is also a lovely example of the Italian Mid-Century decorative ceramic style in general. Alessio Tasca, now approaching 90 years of age, is one of Italy's foremost ceramicists of the 20th Century. Early in his career, he established 'Tasca Brothers' pottery along with his siblings. He received support for the development of his work from Gio Ponti and later toured and exhibited with Guido Gambone. Through these connections he became acquainted with Mario Morelli, the ceramist and glaze expert who then prepared specific shades of colours for the laboratory of the Tasca brothers. In 1957 the head of the ideal standard ceramics plant in Brescia invited him to make some small pieces in vitreous china. As a result, in 1959, Tasca Brothers won the Palladio Prize for their work in 'Morelli Green' glaze. This plate dates from that period, roughly 1957-1960. Wear consistent with age and use. Excellent - no chips or glazing losses, no cracks, crazing or scratches. Fine condition. Final images show the uneven edges of this dish - hand made therefore has charming natural variation.
