Three Antique Dutch Delft Plates Netherlands Circa 1800

About the Item

Made in the Netherlands circa 1800, these three Dutch Delft plates exhibit a naive yet energetic quality. The center of each dish features a beautifully hand-painted arrangement of leaves and flowers in a vibrant mix of colors: deep blue, bright yellow, orange, soft green, and soft purple/brown. The borders of each plate are adorned with floral decoration, predominantly in blue and yellow, which complement the central design. These lively designs add a sense of movement and natural beauty. The combination of the multiple colors on a tin-glazed surface creates a striking contrast, making the motifs stand out against the creamy white background. This group of three Dutch Delft plates has a delightful folk art charm. Dimensions: 9" diameter Condition: Excellent Price: $1260 Background of Polychrome Colored Delft: In the 15th century in the towns of Faenza and Urbino, Italian potters created ceramics with an opaque white, tin-based glaze on fired clay, which served as a ground for polychrome enamel painting. This Italian pottery, locally referred to as Maiolica or Faience, was richly decorated with polychrome colors. These wares were transported from Italy to the Netherlands. In the 16th century, a small group of Italian potters established factories in the Netherlands, making the first polychrome Dutch Delft.
