About the Item

These three dishes were hand-painted circa 1800 in an Imari pattern created by Flight and Barr Worcester. The design is exuberant, featuring large flowers, garden fences, rockwork, and a flying bird surrounding a central medallion. The color combination is exquisite and unexpected, featuring iron red, deep blue, gold, pink, purple, turquoise, green, and light blue. The dishes are painted in a pattern we at Bardith call "Mario's pattern". It is a fabulous pattern! Mario Buatta started his interior design company in 1963 and was a regular client of Bardith since its inception in 1964. Whenever we had pieces of this pattern, we saved them for Mario. Dimensions: shell shape 8" x 7.5", two dishes 8.15" diameter Condition: Excellent Marks: The Worcester factory used the "impressed "F B" mark for Flight and Barr Worcester, which is seen on the underside of each of the three dishes from 1792 to 1807. Price: $1,430 Background of Flight and Barr Worcester Porcelain: In 1788, the owners of the Worcester factory, Joseph and John Flight, opened a prestigious London shop at no.1 Coventry Street (off Piccadilly Circus). The following year, King George III gave Flight his Royal Warrant, allowing them to use the Royal Coat of Arms and the words' Manufacturers to their Majesties'. Also, In 1789, Mrs. Charlotte Hampton was brought from London to take charge of the decorating department. She introduced a new method of gilding. The new gold had a flat mirror-like finish different from anything produced at Worcester before. FLIGHT & BARR 1792–1807 Following John Flight's death in 1791, Joseph Flight took Martin Barr into partnership. By the end of the 18th century, the Worcester Company had developed a new, harder body and glaze that compared well with the very best French porcelain.
