Antique Dressing Case in Coromandel by Betjemann & Sons

Rarely do we see antique dressing cases or antique vanity boxes in such authentic and complete condition as this exceptional example. Everything about this 130-years old dressing case is original and untouched – the French polish, the velvet lining, the bottles and tools, even the key for the Bramah lock. This 1880s antique dressing case is veneered in Coromandel and edged in brass binding around the entire perimeter. The original silver-gilt topped glass bottles and jars are beautifully presented inside the box's blue velvet interior. The eleven glass pieces that complete the set vary in size to accommodate all manner of nineteenth century cosmetics. The centrepiece is a pair of hobnail cut glass perfume bottles with silver-gilt screw tops. Each silver piece is individually hallmarked 'London 1881/82 George Betjemann & Sons'. Underneath the long rectangular jar at the back of the box, sits a pullout leather-bound box lined with original velvet and Moiré silk. The two main compartments holding the bottles and jars swing out at right angles to the box, revealing a tray underneath filled with an array of original tools. In total there are twenty-two ladies accoutrements, including scissors, nail file, tweezers, medicine spoon, retractable pencil, cork screw, pen knife, yarn threader, and many more items of interest. These tools are in wonderful condition; clearly, used very little (if at all) by their original owner. The tool tray lifts out to uncover a leather-bound jewelry tray, lined with original nineteenth century blue velvet. This tray also lifts out to uncover yet another leather-bound tray underneath. When all three trays have been removed, there are another two small pullout drawers cleverly hidden at the base of the box – perfect for hiding valuables. The front flap of the box holds a set of three gilt hand mirrors – the largest mirror is standard glass; the two smaller mirrors are convex and concave glass. A leather-framed mirror sits inside the box's lid and springs forward to reveal a secret leather wallet behind it. The mirror has a ruched velvet panel to the reverse that opens out as a stand.
