About the Item
With a Cedar Wood Lining
From our Silver collection, we are pleased to offer this Art Deco Sterling Silver Cigar Box. The Cigar Box of rectangular shape crafted from Sterling Silver features engine turned panels with strut columns to each corner raised upon stepped feet. When opened the box reveals the original Cedar wood lining with an adjustable partition for varying sized cigars. The Box is hallmarked to both the side of and the inside of the lid Sterling, Birmingham, by John Henry Wynn and dated 1935.
John Henry Wynn was a jeweller located in Soho Hill in Birmingham founded in 1899 and later set up shop in the jewellery quarter where the factory remained until 1996.
Cedarwood has many variations, it is also known as Lebanon Cedar. True Cedar can be found in Asia, Europe and North Africa. Cedar trees are long lived and often offer poor quality, knotty wood. Logs used for veneer are carefully chosen to make sure they have a clean, straight grain. African Cedar, or Bosse, found in West Africa is a pink-brown colour when fresh, turning into a dark almost mahogany colour with age. Brazilian Cedar found in South America is a medium brown colour and Western Red Cedar is found in North America which is a more durable cedar with a colour ranging from pink-brown to dark red.
