About the Item

With Bridge Game Contents From our Boxes collection, we are delighted to offer this Green Stained Shareen Bridge Games Box. The box of rectangular shape seated upon a plinth base with a fully covered exterior in Green stained Shagreen. The Box features applied scrollwork Silver mounts by James Thornton, Birmingham dated 1905 with the word Bridge across the centre of the lid. Opening the card box reveals its solid Oak structure with two packs of playing cards, score papers and its original key located within. The box dates to the early 20th century in line with the Silver hallmarks dated 1905. The Shagreen Box comes complete with working lock and key Oak has many global variations. European Oak, also known as English or French Oak, is found in Europe. It is a well known and very popular wood due to its different types and strength yielding many uses. It can have a very simple clean look or a highly figured finish varying from tree to tree. European Oak can be Golden-yellow to light brown in colour. Brown Oak is from the United Kingdom and its name is derived from its red-brown colour which is resulted from an attack by “beef-steak” fungus. This usually gives the wood an even colour, however, sometimes the wood can be streaked with a light brown giving it the name Tiger Oak. Shagreen is a type of rawhide consisting of rough untanned skin, historically shark or ray. Bridge, the game Bridge was derived from the 17th-century card game Whist, which was in vogue among the English nobility of the time. In whist, four players (who comprise two partnerships) are each dealt 13 cards from a 52-card deck, with a partnership’s objective being to win as many tricks as possible.
