About the Item

Signed and Dated 1961 USSR From our Boxes collection, we are delighted to offer this unusual Russian Papier Mache Box. The box of slim rectangular form features a central fantasy scene the Humpbacked Horse by Pyotr Pavlovich Yershov. The exterior of the box features a small looped border banding and stands upon four flat circular feet. The front scene is signed by the artist in Russian Cyrillic and is dated 1861. The underside of the box reads 'handpainted in the U.S.S.R. The interior of the box is fully lacquered in a vibrant red and has a full length brass hinge. The Humpbacked Horse is a classic Russian tale of a simple peasant boy who defeats a cruel tsar with the help of his loyal pony. It was first published in 1834 and joined the oral tradition of Russian folklore being told for generations and featured on many objects such as this box above. U.S.S.R (Union of Soviet Socialist Republics) or Soviet Union was a transcontinental country that spanned much of Eurasia from 1922 to 1991. A flagship communist state, it was nominally a federal union of fifteen national republics. Both its government and its economy were highly centralized until its final years. It was a one-party state governed by the Communist Party of the Soviet Union and the city of Moscow served as its capital. Other major cities included Leningrad and Kiev. It was the largest country in the world spanning 8,649,500 square miles and eleven time zones. Papier Mache is a man made material consisting of paper pieces bound with an adhesive, such as glue, starch, or wallpaper paste. Measurements (centimetres) 3cm High x 13cm Wide x 11cm Deep
