About the Item

This antique French safe was crafted circa 1880 in the Champagne-Ardenne region by Bauche, renowned for their patented “Système Incombustible” fireproof designs. Weighing 78 pounds, the cast iron coffre-fort is clad in riveted steel strapping with hobnail studs and decorative floral medallions on each side. The front door showcases two brass alphabet dials which, when set to the correct two-letter code (“RG”), activate the key mechanism to unlock the safe. The interior is lined with felt and fitted with a metal shelf, as well as a lower walnut compartment secured by its own lock for additional storage. The engraved plaque on the door reads “Incombustible Système Bauche Breveté S.G.D.G. Usine à Gueux”, confirming its authenticity. Retaining its polished steel trim and rich rouge painted finish, this 19th century strongbox is both functional and decorative, ideal for use in an office, library, or dressing room. Key included.
