About the Item

A mid-19th century lady’s travelling dressing case. The case is constructed in a finely marked coromandel, with inset brass handles and brass guard bands to the angles. The hinged lid rises to reveal in the upper section, a drop down document holder, with a mirror to the back, the parcel gilt pieces are engraved with a Viscountess’s coronet, probably Charles, 2nd Viscount Hardinge Cornwallis (1822-1894) and inset with turquoises and comprise a suite of four cut-glass jars, a liqueur flask with a fitted cup, the pull-out rear shelf houses seven jars for ink, potions and unguents. The lift out platform has sectional jewellery compartments, over, a pair of hexagonal based silver hall marked candlesticks, a thermometer, button hook, folding ruler, corkscrew, and, etc. Hall marked for London, 1850, the makers being Edward, John and William Barnard, English, circa 1850.

By Hunt and Roskell From our Vanity Box collection, we are delighted to offer this Coromandel Silver Gilt Vanity Box by Hunt and Roskell. The Vanity Box of rectangular shape with brass edging veneered in exotic Coromandel with a vacant initial plaque. The front and lid of the box feature brass stringing framing the outer perimeter with a barrel shaped escutcheon to the front. The exterior is finished with twin brass handles, one to each side with shaped accents and ball inlays. The interior of the Vanity Box is lined in royal blue velvet with a ruched inner lid containing a rear compartment holding a free standing mirror and storage for letters. The Vanity Box houses fourteen cut glass jars with engine turned sliver gilt Sterling Silver lids with vacant initial plaques to the centre of each jar. The Silver is hallmarked London, Sterling Silver by Charles Rawlings & William Summers and is dated 1846. To the centre of the top tray there is a rectangular removable tool pad containing various vanity tools. The top tray is removable via the two metal loop tabs to each side, located beneath the tray is a second tray with multiple partitions for jewellery, rings and or cufflinks.The second jewellery tray can be removed to access a larger storage area in the base. The rear of the Vanity Box is partitioned and contains five larger glass jars and an extremely rare silver gilt cup with a lined cushion for the glass jar which sits inside. The interior of the box is finished with a Bramah lock signed on the lock plate J.Bramah, 124 Piccadilly. The Vanity Box comes with its original fitted leather case with full leather straps and dates to the middle of the 19th century during latter years of the Victorian period and the reign of Queen Victoria dated 1846.
