This French fireproof strongbox, crafted circa 1880 by Bauche in the Marne region, showcases the period’s finest industrial security design. Constructed in heavy cast iron and weighing 45 pounds, the coffre-fort features a two-tone finish with polished steel trim contrasting against black painted panels. Studded rivets, reinforced corners, and domed nailhead borders emphasize both strength and visual presence. The front is adorned with a cast relief of the British royal coat of arms, featuring lion and unicorn supporters and the motto "Dieu et mon droit".
The lid bears the original maker’s plaque reading “Incombustible Nouveau Système Breveté S.G.D.G. Bauche à Gueux Marne”, signifying its patented fireproof construction. Retaining its working key, the safe opens to a fitted felt-lined interior with a secure locking door. Side handles allow for transport despite its substantial weight.
Measuring 15 inches wide by 10.25 inches deep and 7.5 inches high, this antique safe exemplifies late 19th century French craftsmanship.
